The wonderful League One returns after a busy few weeks. Here are my best betting picks for League One round 6.

Chaos At The Pirelli
Burton Albion v Exeter City

Burton Albion are, in all seriousness though it might sound silly, a very chaotic football team. They thrive in matches where the ball bounces all over the place and things spiral out of control. I will even go as far as to say that I think that their manager, Dino Maamria, wants his team to play in this sort of way. I’ve watched them a lot, and it’s clear that the strategy is to be über direct and fight for every second ball, and take it from there. That was enough for them to stay up last season, but so far it’s been a bit of a sluggish start to the season. It may be harder to motivate players to play in this “conservative” way when you don’t fight with your back against the wall, for example at the beginning of a season.

Exeter City are next up for The Brewers, who had a midweek game to worry about, unlike Burton who had the week off. In my preview before the season, I had them down as one of a few teams who I considered too good to be relegated, but not good enough to fight at the top of the table for a promotion place. So far, that prediction has aged quite well, although Gary Caldwell and Grecians will think that a promotion push might be on the cards. I don’t think so, and think they’ll have a hard time against a direct and aggressive Burton team, who are certain to attack this game from minute one, especially taking into consideration that they didn’t have a midweek game. A thing to note here is that Burton boss Maamria is serving a touchline ban for this fixture.

Just Too Many Games
Bristol Rovers v Lincoln City

This is yet another game in League One round 6 where the home team has the advantage of not playing in midweek. Rovers were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the 1st round, while Lincoln had to go to Sheffield United on Wednesday night. They actually won on penalties – with a semi-strong team. Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers have not had the greatest start, but I really fancy them to do well this year. Players like Marquis, Thomas, Collins and Sinclair are massive threats going forward, so I’d be surprised to see them finish below 10th.

Taking the extra midweek game that Lincoln had to cope with, and another long travel when they get on the coach to Bristol, I think this is the perfect time to bet against Mark Kennedy’s resilient and physical team. The price is also quite interesting, so I’m happy to back a home win without any “draw no bet fuzz”. 2.50 for a Rovers win here is a great value bet.

Monday Night On The Telly
Cambridge United v Reading

Cambridge have made some interesting adjustments to their style of play this year, sitting deeper and relying more on counter attacks and opponent’s mistakes than they did last year. They’ve never been a possession romantic team, but I’m safe in my words when I say that they’ve not been as defensive as this time around. I think it’s a natural consequence of how things panned out last season, where they almost got relegated. At the heart of defence they have Michael Morrison and Ryan Bennett, who are outstanding aerial players who win most of their duels, but are very weak when they have to run towards their own goal and make up for attackers’ turnovers higher up the field. They enjoy a climate where they can sit deep and defend.

The same is kind of true for Reading, who have a manager who really likes his teams to press with intensity, but who have adjusted to League One’s demanding, physical games. I expect a game with few chances where Cambridge will soak up Reading’s possession, and maybe punish them on a turnover. Home win or draw + under 3.5 goals at 1.83 is a pretty good price for me.

Conclusion

These are my betting picks for League One round 6 summarized:

  • Cambridge v Reading. 1X & under 3.5 goals @ 1.83.
  • Bristol Rovers v Lincoln. Home win @ 2.50.
  • Burton v Exeter. Over 10.5 corners @ 1.90.
