Another round of the League One season is here. Here are my thoughts ahead of the full slate list of action this League One round 10.
When Will Cheltenham Score A Goal?
Lincoln City v Cheltenham Town
I’ll start my weekly League One preview off by looking ahead to a game I think there’s a reasonable chance will finish 0-0.
Cheltenham Town are in a sorry state at the moment. They recently sacked their head coach, Wade Elliott, and probably hoped that to spark some kind of reaction when they hosted Stevenage on Saturday. However, The Robins went on to lose another game, this time by three goals to nil. Interestingly enough, Cheltenham are yet to score a league goal this season! Nine games have seen them score exactly zero goals, whilst they’ve conceded 15, which is about what you’d expect for a relegation-threatened team.
Lincoln City had a tough and demanding game against West Ham on Wednesday night, so fatigue will definitely play a part in this game. Cheltenham had the week off, which is why I at least expect them to match – or even better – Lincoln’s ability to cover grass and put down the needed effort. City won this fixture 2-0 last season, while the away game finished 0-0. I think under 2.5 goals at 1.89 is a complete no-brainer, so of course I’m taking it. Two defensive minded teams…
Angry Fergie
Peterborough United v Bristol Rovers
Another team who was in action during midweek in the league cup, was Peterborough United. They were defeated by League Two side Mansfield after penalties, which spurred Posh boss Darren Ferguson to go on a huge rant about his players and their lack of character and grit when the going gets tough.
Fergie is asking for a reaction and a response when they host Bristol Rovers on Saturday, a team who has picked up some great form at a very good time. Players like John Marquis, Aaron Collins and Luke Thomas are purring, and it looks like The Gas are even tighter at the back as well. A Joey Barton football team will always prioritise the offence and rather win 3-2 than 1-0 – the same I think is true for Fergie. Therefore, one might expect an open game between two teams throwing punches and looking to outscore the other. I think it’ll be open, but my odds reflection here is that Peterborough’s price is too short and that we have some huge value on Bristol Rovers.
As I’m writing these words, Peterborough are priced at 1.85, which is so short for a team who struggle to hit their best level and who had the extra midweek game (away from home, worth mentioning) to cope with. I’m siding with Bristol Rovers, who are my outsider to finish in the top 6 and even better than that this year. 1.96 on Rovers +0.5 (asian handicap) is at least 15-20 points higher than it should be, I think.
My Third Bet
Fleetwood Town v Leyton Orient
Shortly on this game. Looking at it, this is a fixture between two teams with very attack minded managers. Lee Johnson, recently appointed at Fleetwood Town, and Richie Wellens at Leyton Orient, both want to see their teams play on the front foot and be positive in possession. It’s a simplistic analysis, but I haven’t seen anything from Fleetwood after Johnson came in to suggest that they’ve adapted to play more defensively. Over 2.5 goals is my pick in this game, a bet that I don’t take that often, truth be told.
Conclusion
Here are my picks in League One round 10, after getting 2/3 right last time around.
- Fleetwood v Leyton Orient. Over 2.5 goals @ 1.98.
- Lincoln v Cheltenham. Under 2.5 goals @ 1.89.
- Peterborough v Bristol Rovers. Bristol Rovers +0.5 @ 1.96.
