The 7th – very amputated! – round of the League One season is next up. Here are my thoughts ahead of the two only games that are being played in League One round 7.

Impressive Grecians
Exeter City v Leyton Orient

Exeter City went to Burton on Saturday and were worthy winners in a tight game at The Pirelli Stadium. Thanks to a great strike from Ryan Trevitt, The Grecians took all three points against a struggling Burton team. I was impressed by what I saw: they attacked with crispness, and it really looked like they were singing off the same verse. A great start for Gary Caldwell’s team, who actually sit top of League One heading into the international break. However, I think there’s a strong argument to make that they’ve had the easiest run of fixtures of any team so far; the real tests will come, without doubt.

A home game against an Orient team who have been a huge disappointment so far, is one of those games that gives Exeter a great chance to extend their run. Leyton Orient were promoted from League Two by playing great, attractive football, being more possession oriented than their competitors, but have found their style a difficult foundation to cultivate good results from at this level. A great example was on the weekend, where they came up against Stevenage, a team which plays completely different from Orient. They were just outbattled by a very physical team. Reason to worry for Wellens and the way they approach the rest of the season.

I’m always vary of overestimating teams who start well (especially when they’ve generally played quite poor teams), and underestimating those who’ve had a tricky start. I think Orient are better than results are showing us, and I think Exeter’s level is closer to mid-table (at best a play-off push). That’s why my decision is to bet against the favourite here, and take Leyton Orient +0.5 at 2.10.

SteveEvansnage
Stevenage v Carlisle United

Two similar games in League One this weekend, where one of the teams have started well, face a team who should be poorer, and are priced around 1.70-1.80. This is the case here as well, where Steve Evans’ Stevenage (SteveEvansnage) have had a great start to life in League One. He’s a bit of a wise fox in the football business, Mr. Evans, where he takes over at a new club, buys a load of new players, and usually makes them a lot better quite quickly. They play attritional stuff, relying on set pieces and direct counter attacks to score goals.

This style might play into Carlisle United’s hands, who are well equipped to handle that sort of football from their season in League Two last year. They went up through the play-offs, and are about where we would expect to see them in the table thus far.

Whereas I’m happy with my bet in the other game, this is trickier. If I had to bet on something, I’d take under 2.5 goals at 1.80, but it’s not a bet that I’m recommending. I think I need to see more full games from these teams to recommend a bet.

Conclusion

Not much to conclude for this preview of League One round 7. My only bet this weekend in League One is for Exeter not to win at home to Leyton Orient at 2.10.
